Founded in 1839, the American Statistical Association (ASA) is the second oldest continuously operating professional society in the United States. ASA is dedicated to providing its members and the public with the most current and useful information about statistics – “the mathematics of the collection, analysis, interpretation, and presentation of masses of numerical data.”
Applying their expertise in government, academia, and the private sector, ASA members supply important guidance in determining what information is reliable and which predictions can be trusted in areas such as:
• Research in medical areas such as AIDS
• Environment risk assessment
• Development of therapeutic drugs
• Exploration of space
• Quality assurance in industry
• Examination of social issues such as the homeless and the poor
• Economic forecasting
• Development of statistical education
• Advancement of the science of statistics
The influence of ASA members is highlighted by the fact that statistical applications are essential in practically every industry and domain. Their expertise in diverse and vital areas make ASA members receptive to offers for educational developments, government policies, social and environmental issues, technological advancements, career services, analytic research, business and economic forecasting, scientific applications and so much more.
