Founded in 1852, the American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE) represents the largest and most influential group of civil engineers, managers and owners in construction engineering. Responsible for specifying components to build the world's infrastructure, ASCE members have purchasing authority to spend billions of dollars annually on large construction projects including airports, bridges, buildings, transportation systems, utilities, residential subdivisions, dams, roads and highways, water/sewer pipe systems, arenas, power generation and much more.
In addition to structural/construction engineering, ASCE members also actively engage in other engineering specialties such as environmental, geotechnical, architectural, composites, transportation, codes and standards, computer and information technology, materials, urban planning and more. 53% of ASCE members are involved in government-funded projects, giving them decision-making authority for extremely large-scale construction projects.
90% of ASCE members hold degrees in engineering (many have a master's degree or higher) and 85% are licensed professional engineers. Primarily male with a median personal income of $105K, the average ASCE member is 53 years old, has been a member for 20 years, and holds a senior position in their firm that typically employs 760 engineers and 34 architects with average gross annual billings of $210 million.
